Washington Capitals Sign Jack Hillen; Bigger Move Possible?

What are you up to, George McPhee?

The Washington Capitals had seven capable defensemen before the signing of Jack Hillen this morning, pushing the number to eight after the Caps signed the former Nashville Predator.

The 26-year-old was inked to a 1 year, $650,000 contract (one-way) after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Preds.

Hillen recorded just 6 points in 55 games in 2011-12, but registered consecutive 20-point seasons with the New York Islanders before leaving for Nashville last year.

Given the fact that John Erskine, Jeff Schultz, and possibly Cameron Schilling are battling for the sixth and seventh spot in the defensive rotation, this could be a move by GMGM to pick up trade bait.

After causing a serious ruckus with his comments yesterday, McPhee may have another trick up his sleeve to calm down the fanbase.

Is Hillen one of the possible pieces that will be used in a trade for Bobby Ryan? Or does this open up a trade for Schultz/Erskine? We can only speculate at this point.

But it certainly makes one think.
