As most Caps fans already know, development camp started this morning for the Washington Capitals. Many of these players will head to Washington's AHL affiliate Hershey Bears, and others will now report to the ECHL's Reading Royals.
George McPhee made the announcement of the new affiliation this morning on behalf of the Caps, which means the South Carolina Stingrays will no longer be the team's ECHL partner.
Although the Stingrays won the Kelly Cup in 2009 and have been a solid platform for budding NHLers (Michal Neuvirth, Braden Holtby), the move is very intriguing in the business sense. Reading is just an hour away from Hershey.
Call-ups and reassignments will be a much easier process, and Washington can now build its young talent exclusively in Pennsylvania. (Let's keep growing that fan base around Pens and Flyers territory!)
